Kovalam is one of the most famous tourist places in Kerala. It is a pleasant tourist spot which is 16 km near the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Kovalam came upon its name meant 'A grove of coconut trees', by which the whole area beyond the shore is literally filled with the endless sight of coconut trees.  It is known for its serenitical ambiance, rocky shores, low tidal waves, steep palm mounted headlands, privy coves, sun-kissed beaches, sunset views, and less muddy water, thus it is entitled as the 'Paradise of the Sout'...  

Kovalam has created its presence fondled on the worldwide tourist map, due to its clean and outlandish beaches lined with glittering sand and tall lighthouse. The Vizhinjamseaportt and The Proposed Vizhinjam International Transshipment Terminal are also alongside.

Geographical Indication

The coastal towns of Kovalam make lively with its freshening up nature and the pristine atmosphere. Due to the presence of ilmenite and Monazite, the beach sand is partially black in color, causes the dry sand to heat up viciously. The normal tourist season is from September to May. 

Kovalam has 17 km coastline which includes 3 spectacular beaches separated by rocky outcroppings. The southernmost Lighthouse Beach is the most falcate among the three and is 35 mts high built using stones, hence the largest at Kovalam, which attributes a stunning picture of the entire beach zone, seaport and the Beemapalli mosque.  Lighthouse is squatting on the top of Kurumkal hillock, hence the locution came. Samudra Beach on northern part is a beehive, in which fishermen tending their activities in aquarelle, instead of tourist horde. Eve’s Beach, positioning at the middle of both, is an elevated rock foreland presumed with beautiful surroundings.  Ashoka beach on the north side is also a part of Kovalam beach.

Historical background

Beginning as an ordinary limited fishing town entrusted to the utmost corner of Kerala, the story of Kovalam’s rise to fame as an internationally esteemed beach destination is a quite prismatic one.  At the end of the 1920s, the Travancore’s  Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi build a private residence at a rock top near the region, and later the palace was named as Halcyon Castle. In 1936, The Queen HH Karthika Thirunal and her husband 1st Prince GV Raja found immense tourist capability, they promote the region among their patrons. Later Maharaja of Travancore, nephew of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi hosted many parties and banquets for all his state guests including Sir Thomas Cook & Sons, who were equally beguiled with this enclave, it helped to develop the region and thereafter Kovalam was brought to the public.  Gently European guests, as well as Indian aristocrats, settled in Bombay Presidencies and Madras got attracted to the village. Thus, the move lead to lay foundations of the modern tourism industry in South India. 

After Independence, the village continued to have a small but steady flow of Indians and some foreign tourists.  Then Kovalam’s reputation for being a great tourist destination grew in popularity mainly in the early seventies, with the arrival of masses of hippies. They rediscovered the charms of this fishing village and the hippie culture helped to revive the beach, with a vast influx of tourists. It still has a high status among tourists, who arrive mostly from Europe and Israel. Once the government realized the potential of the state as a tourist magnet, towards the 1990s, Kovalam was the first traveler spots to be publicized for Kerala tourism. And today its deliberately a prominent picturesque beach, the great transformation from a casual fishing village.

Cultural importance

The place included in a district, which has a rich cultural heritage as the ancient rulers rooted great base in growing within art and mannerism. It is captivating in this place, mainly countryside, influencing a large number of tourists to revel in its mystical charm.  Fortunately, In Kerala, there is a deep respect and tolerance for many different faiths, and Kovalam’s people mainly follow traditions and customs that are a blend of Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam.
