POONJAR PALACE

This royal palace is an architectural masterpiece, with wonderful collection of vintage furniture and antique items including jewel box, weapons, statues, palm lead engravings, a palanquin, huge chandeliers, grain measures, various kinds of lamps, sculptors of Lord Nataraja, a treatment bed called droni made from single piece of wood. It has ancient wooden carvings that persists rich heritage and rustic traditions of Kerala. 

CHANDRAGIRI CRUISES 

Kottayam backwater cruises offers boat ride to the nearby islands and palm grooves. Chandragiri Bridge is the point to get on, which is sited near the ancient Kizhur Sastha Temple.

VAIKOM SHIVA TEMPLE

One of the famous Mahadeva temple, located 40 km away from the city, believed to be related with the legendary mythical founder Parashurama. The 12 day festival with musical performances and classical dances, offering of prathal in the form of worship are the main appeal here.

ST. MARY’S ORTHODOX CHURCH

Constructed in Portuguese architecture with the assistance of Thekkumkoor Maharajah, this religious establishment resonates a strong devotional sense with attractive murals on varied biblical as well as non-biblical themes. Annual feast is organized which the Feast of St. Mary’s, is also known as ‘Vithukalude Perunnal’ meaning ‘the festival of seeds’ during which the statue of Koratty Muthy is taken out in possession from the church.

St Mary's Church in Valiapally, St Mary's Orthodox Church at Cheriyapally and the St Joseph's Monastery at Mannanam can also be visited.

THE MOSQUE AT ERUMELI

It is a famous pilgrimage destination located about 60 km north-east of the backwater destination of Kottayam, a mosque dedicated to Vavar, the companion of the deity Sree Ayyappa of the Sabarimala temple. It is a symbol of universal peace and brotherhood. Erumeli Pettathullal is the festival carried on every month of January.

Other temples are the Temple at Ettumanoor, and the Temples of Perunna, Vazhappally. You can visit the other pilgrim centres of Mannanam, Sabarimala, and Bharananganam in Kottayam.
