The second Largest Lake in Kerala, the well-known Ashtamudi Lake which is the spectacular network of waterways, covering around 30 percent of the area of the district Kollam or Quilon longs for the dawnings of Kollam backwaters. This fetching coastal district is famed as an ancient port town and trading centers of Kerala and it is the centre of cashew industries, marine, coir products, cane, clay, matchbox, coconut oil etc.

The Chinese fishing nets hanging from poles to the surface of water is a common sight. Traditionally, the backwaters are used by local people for transportation, fishing, and agriculture. This town explores its beauty remarkably with lush green landscape, diverse wildlife, verdant tropical vegetations and houses & villages that line up along the path. There is an old saying “the one who sees Kollam forgets his Illam (home)!!”.

There are many beautiful structures, famous temples and monuments built in the traditional ornate architectural style like the Devi Temple at Thevalakkara, Anandavalleswaram Temple, the old Pullichira church, Sree Dharma Sastha Temple with its view of Sasthamkotta fresh water Lake Etc. Annual snake boat races, held along the backwaters, also provide a great source of entertainment for the locals and tourists alike.

Ashtamudi named so: The word “Ashta” stands for 8 in Sanskrit & “mudi” stands for hair or branch, so that “Ashtamudi” lake derives its name from the gathering of the 8 streams.

Ashtamudi backwaters: The 8 channels coincide into a single outlet at Neendakara estuary intrude into the Arabian sea. Kallada river is the major river discharging into the Ashtamudi lake, which is formed by the confluence of three rivers; Kulathupuzha, Chenduruni and Kalthuruthy, that are originates from Western Ghats. The numerous coconut groves and palm trees dot the lakeside add to its scenic beauty.

Munroe Island: Meandered water channels and intertwined canals are the main attractions of this small village which is surrounded by Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River.

Jatayu Nature Park: Located in Chadayamangalam village, sculpture is a mythical bird from Ramayana having 200 feet long, 150 feet broad, 70 feet in height and has a floor area of 15,000 square feet.

Alumkadavu: On the way to Allapuzha 23km from Kollam it is a small settlement by the backwaters, which is home to skilled artisans who craft the enormous kettuvallam.

Amrithapuri: Devotees and visitors flock to Amritanandamayi Asram, which is one of the famous Spiritual places and Kayamkulam lake and Karunagapally are also lying on its bank.
