The way in between Cochin and Alappuza there is a huge dyke called Thanneermukkam bund which entirely blocks the lake, which was built to prevent saline water entering into land.  

As a part of Vembanad Lake, bolgatti Palace, Vypin islands and Cochin Shipyard is located near Kochi backwaters. Western Kochi, known as fort Kochi has the remains of old Dutch invasion, also the British, Chinese, Portuguese and Arab influence are very evident. The Jew street as well as an old synagogue make Cochin specific and memorable treasure. Marine Drive

It is a picturesque boulevard in the city of Kochi which is built facing to the backwaters, Ironic to its name, no vehicles are allowed on the walkway. It's 140 m colonnade that stretches from the Jankar Jetty in the north to the Ernakulam Boat Jetty in the south. Along the way from the High Court Junction to the Rajendra Maidan, several boat jetties are available and International Boat Jetty Complex is also situated here. The walkway has three contemporary constructed bridges, the Rainbowbridge, the Chinese Fishing Net Bridge and the House Boat (Kettuvallam) Bridge. These are the major landmarks shows its legendary for the light ways including GCDA shopping complex that can indulge ones inner shopaholic with satisfactorily. The entire area is unique with manmade wonders bestrewed with natural gifts right in the midst of a sprawling metropolis.

The gentle breeze from the Vembanad Lake, and view of the rising and setting sun over the sea mouth has made Marine walkway the main hangout place. The Boat Jetty that operates ferry services to various islands is at Marine Drive, with views of old tiled-roof houses, building of the Cochin Port Trust etc. There are two boat jetties – Ernakulam boat Jetty at the south and High Court Junction Boat Jetty at the north.The Oil Tanker Berth, the Cochin Shipyard, the Bolgatty Palace, Mattancherry Jewish Synagogue, Jew Street, VallarpadomTerminal are connected by these ferries.

Cherai Beach, Kochi

Located 35 kms from the Cochin city, this is considered as golden beach of Kerala and is known as ‘Princess of Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Chinese fishing nets or Cheena Vala is well placed in the Cherai village that provides a wonderful view. It lies to the north-end of Vypeen Island in which both backwaters and sea are blended ideally. Dolphins are specked on and off at shores, also the seashells found here have different shapes and shades. The edges of Cherai beach walkway are adorned with high lamps so that leisure walks can be enjoyed at night too. The day time pleasure includes swimming, sunbathing, surfing and other water sports activities.

Mattancherry Palace

It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Kochi, an admirable example of Kerala style architecture interspersed with colonial influences.  It was built by Portuguese as a present to King Veera Kerala Verma of Kochi for establishing trading relations with the kingdom. It came to be known as the Dutch Palace as it underwent major renovation by the Dutch.

The palace built in traditional naalukettu model has a central courtyard which was home of the deity of the royal family, Pazhayannur Bhagavathy. The unique flooring imitates black marble with a mixture of burnt coconut shells, lime, plant juices and egg-whites. This double storied edifice has a bewitching collection of mural paintings covering 300 sq.kms and antique royal prerogatives with sheathed swords, daggers and axes besides ceremonial spears decorated with feathers, royal caps, coins issued by the Kings of Cochin etc.
